Unframed. New Zealand artist, Barbara Elizabeth Blakemore Fowler (1921-2004), studied at Canterbury School of Fine Arts, New Zealand over the span of nine years, attending night classes. Her tutors included Bill Sutton, Rudi Gopas, Russell Clark.

At the same time she worked at the DSIR in geophysics and the US cosmic radiation program. Barbara was a member of the Canterbury Society of Arts for forty years, and regularly exhibited with the Society in Christchurch.

Clearly influenced by other great New Zealand female artists including Frances Hodgkins, Doris Lusk and Rita Angus.

Author’s biography

Barbara Elizabeth Blakemore Fowler (1921-2004), studied at Canterbury School of Fine Arts, New Zealand over the span of nine years, attending night classes – while raising a family.  Her tutors included Bill Sutton, Rudi Gopas, Russell Clark and Ivy Fife.

At the same time she worked at the DSIR in geophysics and the US cosmic radiation program.  Barbara was a member of the Canterbury Society of Arts for forty years.
